KIRKSVILLE, MO (KSNT) – The Ichabods open the season with a W in the Show Me State.
Washburn football (1-0) wins its season opener on the road against Truman State 27-21.
It marked Washburn’s 7th straight win over Truman State.
Sophomore quarterback Logan Madden threw for two touchdowns and 328 yards. He was 28-for-38 passing.
His favorite receiver was Nate Lewis Jr., connecting with him for nine passes for 72 yards. Tre Calhoun led the Ichabods in receiving yards with 117 yards on seven catches and a score.
On the ground, Quinton Renfro paced Washburn with 55 yards while Cam Robinson rushed for 47 and a score.
Defensively, Topeka native J.C. Heim had eight tackles, including a sack. Al-Mani Jimerson recorded a sack as well. Clay Center’s Brody Hayes had a team-high 10 tackles.
Truman State opened the scoring early in the first quarter on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Hair to Adam Hall.
In the second quarter. Washburn’s Cam Robinson scored the first touchdown of the season for the Ichabods. He rushed from 16 yards out to find the endzone as the Ichabods tied the game at 7-7.
Next possession for Washburn, Logan Madden connected with Dwayne Moorehead for a 27-yard score as the Ichabods took the lead.
Aidan Battle would knock in a field goal with 15 seconds to go in the half to give Washburn a 17-7 lead at the break.
Out of the break, Madden found Tre Calhoun for a 45-yard touchdown, putting the Ichabods up 24-7.
Battle netted his second field goal of the game in the fourth to push the lead to 27-7.
Truman State would score back-to-back touchdowns with throws from Hair to cut the game to 27-21 but it wouldn’t be enough as Washburn secured the win.
The Ichabods will host Colorado School of Mines on Sept. 5 in the home opener. Kickoff is set for noon.
