LYON COUNTY (KSNT) — Two people are facing misdemeanor animal cruelty charges after 41 dogs and cats were removed from a mobile home in Lyon County.
Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies, animal control officers and Prairie Paws responded to the home Wednesday morning to remove the animals.
According to the Emporia Police Department, officers first learned about the situation Tuesday and obtained a search warrant before entering the home.
Emporia Police Sgt. Dominick Vortherms said the animals were found living in unsanitary conditions.
“We secured, I think, 41 total animals with cats and dogs from a mobile home, which was a lot just opening the door,” Vortherms said. “That’s a lot of dogs that came with the door right away almost. … Home was unsanitary. I mean, that’s the reason we’re there. We’re there for the well-being of those animals. But it’s not good living conditions for them at all.”
Two people who lived in the home were arrested and are facing misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.

The animals were taken to Prairie Paws, where they are receiving food, water and space to run while they receive care.
The case will now be sent to the Lyon County Attorney’s Office for review.
