TOPEKA (KSNT) – September is National Preparedness Month, and local officials are reminding people to think ahead before severe weather arrives.
Shawnee County Emergency Management said the preparedness month is a chance for people to review their emergency plans and ensure they’re ready for a variety of weather conditions.
27 News talked to a spokesperson from Shawnee County Emergency Management, Dylan Hart, and he emphasized that people should think ahead.
“This is a chance to think about flooding,” Hart said. “If there is a blizzard, something we’re dealing with right now, [like] extreme heat. What do you do when those things happen?”
Hart said residents should have a plan in place before an emergency happens and to make sure to have a way to receive weather alerts, like weather radios.
County officials recommend keeping an emergency kit stocked with things such as water, flashlights, batteries and other essential supplies. To find out more information about emergency preparedness, click here.
