TOPEKA (KSNT) — The Ichabods totaled 328 yards in the air against Truman State; 117 of those receiving yards came from sophomore leader Tre Calhoun.
The sophomore receiver led Washburn in the season-opening win with seven catches for 177 yards and a touchdown. In just one game, he recorded more receiving yards than he did in his entire freshman season.
Plus, his connection with Washburn quarterback Logan Madden shines on the field, as the two of them have been roommates since freshman year.
“Me and him have been super super close since freshman year, and we have just been building on that,” Calhoun told 27 Sports.
This young wide receiver room runs deep, with ten different Ichabods touching the ball in last week’s win, and seven reaching double digit receiving yards.
“Everybody can play, we are 12, ten deep, everybody can play, everybody is motivated, we all just want to get better and push each other,” said Calhoun.
“Tre is a great example of what they’ve done and the chemistry they have, and a lot of those guys are the same age,” head coach Zach Watkins said. “They are redshirt sophomores, second or third-year players, so they are still young, but it’s good to see that come to fruition after a summer’s work.”
Washburn will take on Colorado School of Mines on Saturday at Yager Stadium. Kickoff is set for 9:05 a.m.
