TOPEKA (KSNT) – As millions of monarch butterflies begin their annual migration through Kansas, a Topeka children’s learning center is hosting an event this weekend for kids to learn more.
Laura Burton with the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center stopped by the 27 News studio on Friday morning to promote the event.
Each year, monarch butterflies travel thousands of miles across North America to their wintering grounds in Mexico. The migration passes through Kansas starting in early September through October.
Burton said the Discovery Center will hold its Symbolic Monarch Migration Activity from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 5. Children will color paper monarch butterflies that will be sent to Mexico, where children will create their own artwork and send it back to Kansas.
“It’s a fun way of us working together with another country to demonstrate how cool it is that monarchs fly all this way,” Burton said.
The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center is located at 4400 SW 10th Ave. in west Topeka. More information is available on its website.
