TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Thunderbirds are ready to prove themselves under the Friday Night Lights.
Shawnee Heights football is coming off a 4-5 season and has lost key offensive playmakers from last year.
“Last year we didn’t perform as well as we should have,” senior Javon Williams told 27 Sports. “Last year I feel like we could have gotten a lot farther, even getting that title.”
This season, the T-Birds could be considered a big underdog; but that only fuels them more.
“Underdog, we prefer it that,” Williams said. “We like when people don’t think that ‘Oh hey, we don’t believe you in guys.’ That’s fine, we will just go out and show out every single Friday night at 7 o’clock.”
The Thunderbirds are led by head coach Jason Swift, who enters his 24th season at the helm. He told 27 Sports that this squad’s physicality is a strong suit for them this season.
“This year we’ve been competing every step of the way,” Swift said. “Whether it’s during the summer or these first three weeks of the season. We’re a competitive group.”
Thunderbirds open the season at home against Turner at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 4.
