TOPEKA (KSNT) – A hectic home opener for the Washburn Ichabods.
Washburn hosted the Colorado School of Mines with the game officially ending in a tie.
The game was tied at 16 entering overtime, but was postponed due to the extreme heat. After a lengthy delay, the game was officially called as a tie.
It’s the first tie for the Ichabods since a 7-7 tie against Missouri Western in 1977.
“The weather is hot, and there is no way around it,” Washburn head coach Zach Watkins told 27 Sports. “The decisions are made above coaches, but it’s all about keeping the kids safe. It’s the weather, the timing, it’s the coming back from all of that stuff. Just got done talking to the team, and we’re 1-0 and move on.”
The Ichabods struck early in the first quarter as Logan Madden found Nathan Lewis Jr. for a 28-yard score to get on the board.
The Orediggers would get a field goal in the second quarter but Washburn’s Aidan Battle would knock in a 26-yarder as the Ichabods led 10-3 at the break.
Out of the half, CSM scored 10 straight with a touchdown and then a field goal to take a 13-10 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Orediggers would knock in a field goal midway through the quarter to take a six-point lead.
Washburn would respond as Madden connected with Lewis again, this time for 47 yards. The Ichabods missed the PAT, however, and the game would go to overtime.
Due to the heat, the game was postponed before the OT period tied at 16.
Madden finished 20-35 for 268 yards. Lewis finished with six catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
Brody Hayes and J.C. Heim had 13 tackles each in the tie.
The Ichabods now hit the road next weekend for an MIAA matchup vs. Northwest Missouri State.
