TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Fire Department (TFD) and city leaders are taking proactive steps to promote fire safety ahead of the arrival of winter temperatures.
October is fire prevention month, and with cooler weather come space heaters, heated blankets and more people using their fireplaces. Topeka Fire Chief Chad Longstaff said that when working smoke alarms are installed, the risk of dying in a house fire goes down by 60%.
The TFD is encouraging residents to update their smoke alarms by offering convenient incentives. The TFD is partnering with the Red Cross to give out free smoke alarms to Topekans in need. They’ll even come by your house and install them free of charge.
“Whatever your home is, if you have one floor, three floors, it doesn’t matter if you have six floors; all go on each floor,” Longstaff said. “So, there’s not a limited number to that, to that home.”
