TOPEKA (KSNT) – It’s National Forensic Science Week, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is teaming up with Washburn’s forensic science programs to kick off the festivities.
Students at Washburn University got the opportunity to network and speak to multiple professionals across different areas during an event on campus on Sept. 22. Students got the chance to ask questions or have a conversation one-on-one in a new hands-on learning experience they otherwise might not normally have gotten.
Working for you, we spoke to Washburn’s Director of Forensic Chemistry, Holly O’Neill, on the benefits of hosting a roundtable like this for students.
“This is an opportunity for the students to get one-on-one time with people in an informal setting,” O’Neill said. “So much of the information that they get is online. So, this gives them a chance to actually visit with a person. We’ve invited a variety of scientists from different areas of forensics to come talk to students.”

With Washburn University being a smaller institution, they have a lower student-to-faculty ratio. At the KBI shared facility on campus, which is heading into its 10th year, students have access to internships and shared labs with scientists in the field.
