TOPEKA (KSNT) – Race Against Breast Cancer (RABC) Executive Director Dawn Robertson stopped by the 27 News studio to talk about Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month and, during the first week, RABC hosts its annual 5k fundraiser. Robertson said they this was their 35th anniversary and raised around $20,000.
“Our 5k fundraiser is our largest fundraiser of the year, and that’s where we get the majority of the funds that we use to pay for screening and diagnostic mammography in our community,” Robertson said. “That’s the passion of our program.”
Robertson said the goal of the organization is to catch breast cancer in its earliest stages.
“Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate, and neither do we,” Robertson said. “We will cover screening, mammograms, diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds for men and women of any age that are in medical and financial need in our community. We have raised over $2 million in out 35 years and spent it all right here in northeast Kansas with area mammography centers.”

During the month several local businesses and organizations have deals to donate to the RABC and its cause including Texas Roadhouse, Performance Tire & Auto, Blue Dot and more.
“Breast cancer does not discriminate, and it doesn’t matter if you are young or if you’re old, if you’re 19 or if you’re 75, if you’re a man or a woman, it doesn’t discriminate,” Robertson said.
“So, the best thing you can do is be body aware.”
