TOPEKA (KSNT) – Check your mailboxes the week of Oct. 19. You may find your medical debt is paid off.
Somos Votantes Education Fund announced its second wave of medical debt relief on Monday, Oct. 5. The nonprofit, along with its partner, Undue Medical Debt, has helped almost 27,000 Kansans thanks to an over $42 million donation.
For founder and CEO Melissa Morales, this hits home as a Kansas native.
“I know how hard families here work and also have seen firsthand how quickly one unexpected bill can knock everything sideways for people,” Morales said. “So, in our view, a medical bill shouldn’t be the reason someone can’t pay rent or put food on the table. But that does seem to be the reality right now for a lot of hardworking Kansans. So, we just hope that this program gives a little bit of breathing room to families across our state. “
Eligible people do not need to apply as there is no application process, according to the Somos Votantes Education Fund. People who qualify for this relief have medical debts that are 5% or more of their annual income or those who earn at or below four times the federal poverty level.
