TOPEKA (KSNT) – Junior League of Topeka President Ashley Charest stopped by the 27 News studio to chat about an upcoming project, upcoming events and membership.
The Junior League of Topeka (JLT) has a signature project that runs every 3-6 years to help support the Topeka community. The current project is the “Project Period Topeka” and started this past June.
“It is about creating period packs for young ladies as well as women in our community that are not able to afford feminine hygiene products,” Charest said. “Half of our population needs them and it’s a huge need in the community.”
Sharest said the community along with Stormont Vail came out with a community needs assessment. On the assessment, the Junior League of Topeka noticed that period items were a huge need in the community.
“One of the glaring pieces we saw on that for us as an organization focused on women is we saw that period items were a huge need,” Charest said. “We are at that first step, getting the products out there that are needed in the community and then potentially an education component could come later.”
