LYON COUNTY (KSNT) – State health officials on Wednesday issued a boil water advisory for two Lyon County cities.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced in a press release that Admire and Allen are under an active boil water advisory. The advisory will remain in place until further notice.
KDHE issued the advisory because the cities are unable to maintain the minimum chlorine residuals required for a public water supply system, which creates the risk of bacterial contamination.
Residents and business are encouraged to take the following precautions while the advisory remains in place:
- Boil water for a minute before drinking or food preparation or use bottled water
- Discard of ice cubes and don’t use ice from an automatic icemaker
- If your tap water looks dirty, flush the water lines by allowing the water to run until it appears clear
- Disinfect dishes and other food-contact surfaces by putting them in clean tap water for at least a minute that has one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water
- Water used for bathing doesn’t generally need to be boiled. Children should be supervised during bathing to make sure they do not ingest the water. People with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians
People with questions can contact the City of Admire water system at 620-343-5379, the City of Allen water system at 620-528-3201, or KDHE at 785-296-5514.
