TOPEKA (KSNT) – A local mom is getting ready to open a new bakery at Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center this weekend that specializes in sourdough.
Mom of two, Kayla Morrow, owner of H & A Sourdough Bakery, said this has been a long time coming. What started out as a hobby inspired by family traditions and that progressed into days at farmers markets and pop-up events has now turned into a new bakery in southwest Topeka.
Morrow said it’s always been the goal to find a place to open her bakery and that Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center offered a perfect opportunity.
“Started out as my hobby to give me something else to do other than just being a mom,” Morrow said.

Morrow said her youngest daughter is immunocompromised and that, after she and her husband Nathan learned of this, she wanted to bake things that don’t rely on yeast, preservatives or artificial flavors to give her two children healthy food. She said the base for all her sourdough products are flour, water and salt.
“Baking to me gives me still that connection with my great grandma who passed away in 2019 and it also kind of brings me together with my girls,” Morrow said.
People will be able to find other bakery products at H & A once it opens, including cinnamon rolls, cookies, scones and muffins. Customers will also be able to purchase pancake mix and a homemade Italian-style seasoning once the business opens.
“So, we specialize in sandwich-style loaves of sourdough bread,” Morrow said. “All of our bread is pre-sliced for our customers’ convenience.”

Morrow said the upcoming grand opening will feature activities for children, such as balloon artists and face painting, along with “golden ticket” giveaways for the first 24 customers.
H & A Sourdough Bakery will open for its first day from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 inside Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center located at 2114 SW Chelsea Dr. in southwest Topeka. Her business will be open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays to Saturdays. You can learn more about what the bakery has to offer by following it on Facebook.
