Topeka police responded to reports of a shooting around 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 4, 2025, in the 1000 block of Northeast Poplar Street. Law enforcement arriving in the area found two men suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Medical personnel declared one of the gunshot victims, identified as Kaberline, dead at the scene. First responders took the other gunshot victim to a local hospital.
Police arrested Thompson shortly after the shooting. Prosecutors filed charges against him on Sept. 9, 2025.
Thompson pleaded not guilty to his charges in January this year, with a jury trial scheduled to begin next week. However, the trial was cancelled after the plea agreement was reached on Oct. 16.
