TOPEKA (KSNT) – League of Women Voters of Topeka and Shawnee County Secretary Cindy Lash stopped by the 27 News studio to talk about the upcoming election season.
The Kansas General Election is underway, and Shawnee County begins advanced in-person voting on Monday. Lash said it’s important for people to check their ballots before heading to the polls.
“If they get their ballot so that they can see in advance who all the candidates are then they can go to candidate websites because a candidate is going to tell you why they think you should vote for them,” Lash said.
Along with the many candidates on this ballot there is a constitutional amendment. The way the amendment is listed on ballot appears below.
Vote Yes or No
“Explanatory statement. This amendment would clarify that only a person who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to vote in this state.”
“A vote for this proposition would clarify that only a person who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to vote in this state.”
“A vote against this proposition would make no change to the constitution of the state of Kansas, and the language concerning voter qualifications would remain the same.”
Shall the following be adopted?

Lash explained the League of Women Voters of Shawnee County are against this amendment on the ballot.
“What this amendment would do is tweak the langauge in a way that appears slight, it would say only citizens of the United States who are 18 and reside in the area can vote,” Lash said. The League takes a position on that and we are opposed to that because you already have to be a citizen have to be a citizen to vote by our Consitution. So what this amendment would do is we think open the door to documentary proof of citizenship.”
Lash emphasized it’s important for people to go out and vote so people their voices are heard.
Lash was wearing a League of Women Voters pin on her jacket and said “I have this button on, but I thought I should’ve also my button that says democracy is not a spectator sport. Because our democracy only works to the extend that people makes themselves heard.”
