TOPEKA (KSNT) – Officials with the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) have announced a major investment into I-70 Tuesday morning.
KTA staff announced in a press release that a $136.6 million investment will add more room for highway travelers along a nine-mile stretch of I-70 in northeast Kansas. The project will expand the turnpike to six lanes and replace two overhead bridges in Douglas and Leavenworth counties.
KTA officials awarded the multi-million-dollar construction contract to Wildcat Construction Co., Inc. & Subsidiaries to widen the highway from four to six lanes between mile markers 204.5 and 213.5. Transportation authorities said this work will modernize this section of I-70 that will serve drivers for many years into the future.
“This investment is about preparing the Turnpike for the future while continuing to provide the reliable roadway our customers depend on every day,” said KTA Chief Engineer Glen Scott. “By expanding this nine-mile stretch of I-70 to three lanes in each direction, we’re creating more room for travelers by addressing congestion, safety, and future growth.”
Intersection repair project on Northwest Topeka Boulevard starts soon
Staff with the KTA anticipate work to begin on March 15, 2027, and continue through to June 15, 2029. More information about construction impacts and traffic changes will be provided in the months ahead as the project moves forward.
