TOPEKA (KSNT) – Staff at the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center report a resident African lion is set to leave soon as part of a breeding program.
Cynthia McCarvel with the Topeka Zoo said in a press release on Oct. 28 that Tatu, an African lion, will be moved to San Antonio Zoo in early November. She said this comes as part of a breeding recommendation as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
McCarvel said the SSP program coordinates breeding recommendations and animal transfers among accredited zoos and aquariums as part of efforts to maintain genetic diversity and to support healthy populations. She said animal transfers also support long-term sustainability of species that are in human care.
“We know our guests have enjoyed getting to know Tatu, and we’ll certainly miss seeing him here at the Zoo,” said Wrylie Guffey, Animal Care Director. “It’s always hard to say goodbye to an animal we’ve cared for, but we’re excited for what this next chapter holds for him. Being part of the Species Survival Plan allows us to play a role in supporting the future of African lions, and we’re grateful to have shared a part of Tatu’s journey.”
Tatu arrived at the Topeka Zoo in 2023.
