TOPEKA (KSNT) – Halloween is only a few days away, and some four-legged friends may be put at risk by certain holiday traditions.
Experts say keeping your pets safe this Halloween starts with keeping them inside and away from the front door. Trick-or-treaters, doorbells and costumes can be stressful, especially for dogs.
People should make sure their pets wear an ID tag and are microchipped in case they get out. If your pet is wearing a costume, make sure it’s comfortable.
“Make sure they can breathe easily through it,” said Susan Nelson, veterinarian at Kansas State University. “They can see through it; that’s not little buttons or anything else they can pull off and swallow. That could cause a foreign body. So, try it out ahead of time. Second best, just put a bandana on, and a Halloween-themed bandana. That’s usually a safer route to go. “

If your furry friend accidentally ingests some treats they shouldn’t have, like chocolate glow sticks or moldy pumpkins, Nelson said to call your veterinarian or call the ASPCA pet poison hotline at 855-764-7661 for guidance.
