TOPEKA (KSNT) – Washburn is coming off another top defensive performance, highlighted by three forced turnovers, two of which went on for a pair of touchdowns.
The plan is simple for this Ichabod defense: be physical.
“Fort Hays State was a really physical team, and we preached physicality and effort all week,” Washburn linebacker Jaren Heim told 27 Sports. “Going into the game, that’s all we did.”
Washburn leads the MIAA in forced fumbles (12) and fumbles recovered (13) this season. The Ichabods’ defense continues to shine for Washburn when it comes to takeaways and capitalizing on them.
“We are a very intentional situational practice team,” Washburn football head coach Zach Watkins told 27 Sports said. “We have won games on the defensive side with those situations showing up. Our offense has won us a couple of games that way. Defense has done the same thing. But those three weeks where we’ve won the game on a last play interception has been pretty exciting.”
“Every snap is just be more physical and just have all the effort that you can. And I just feel like we did a really good job of doing that, which led to turnovers and takeaways.”
The Ichabods (5-2-1, 4-2 MIAA) will host the Missouri Western Griffons (3-5, 2-4 MIAA) for homecoming on Oct. 31. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
