LAWRENCE (KSNT) — The Jayhawks would outscore the Ichabods 21-7 in the third quarter, leading them to a 68-50 win.
Kansas women’s basketball would be pushed by the Washburn Ichabods in a physical game, especially in the first half.
Through the first quarter, KU led by just three points. A 13-0 run in the second would push the ‘Hawks to a 26-13 lead with just a little over four minutes left in the half. Washburn was able to respond with a 7-0 run of their own to trail by just five at the break.
A big third quarter performance by Kansas would see them outscore the ‘Bods 21-7, pushing to a 55-33 lead with a quarter to go.
In the fourth, the Ichabods would be able to hang on with an 11-0 run to cut their deficit to 14 points. Despite the effort, Kansas would hold off the Ichabods for the win.
This would be a physical contest between these two teams, as Washburn forced 25 turnovers, and the Jayhawks forced 27 from the Ichabods.
“The team performed really well, especially with the physicality of the game,” Kansas head coach Brandon Schneider said. “That experience will be valuable as we move into non-conference and conference play against teams that bring a similar level of physicality. It’s important that we continue to emphasize poise and composure as a team. Focusing on the little things will ultimately be what leads to our success.”
The Jayhawks saw three players reach double-digit scoring. Libby Fandell led the team with 16 points, followed by Brittany Harshaw with 15 and Regan Williams with 14.
Looking at the Ichabods, 10 different players were able to put points on the board. Washburn was led by Sarah Gatwech with 10 points and four rebounds.
Washburn head coach Lora Westling was pleased with her team’s physical performance on the court, adding it’s similar to what her team will face in MIAA play.
“For us to have, you know, nine new players and be able to kind of give them a taste of that early is really important,” Westling said. “When they see that first league game and some of the teams we have on our schedule, it’s not quite as much of a shock. So really valuable experience for us.”
The Jayhawks will open their season on Nov. 3 at home against Omaha.
The Ichabods will open their season on Nov. 13 in the Central Region Crossover.
