TOPEKA (KSNT) — The Ichabods are moving on.
Washburn soccer beat Northeastern State 1-0 in the first round of the MIAA Tournament to advance to the semifinals.
After a scoreless first half, Haley Thomsen would find the back of the net in the 74th minute to give the Ichabods their lone goal of the day, which was enough to advance.
“Sometimes you start forcing it and if you just find open passes, a lot of times it’ll open itself up,” Washburn soccer head coach Davy Phillips said. “So I thought we did a really good job executing in that time.”
“Sam (Searcey) and Lindsey (Maul), they executed that really well,” Thomsen told 27 Sports. “Lindsey driving down the sideline, like she found Sam and Sam just slotted a perfect ball into the goal, and it was off the other players foot and right to me.”
The Ichabods outshot the Riverhawks 34-2 with 12 shots on goal.
Washburn will now meet rivals Emporia State in the MIAA semifinals with the winner of the postseason Turnpike Tussle advancing to the MIAA Championship.
The game will be played on Friday, Nov. 6 at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita. Kickoff time is TBD.
