TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas’ top election official said people should expect unofficial vote totals to increase in the days after the Tuesday general election.
Kansas Secretary of State (SOS) Scott Schwab said in a press release that unofficial vote results from the general election may increase between Nov. 4 and Nov. 6. He said this stems from the Kansas three-day grace period that allows advanced mail ballots to be counted in the election.
Advanced mail ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 3 and received by county election offices by Nov. 6 to be eligible for inclusion in the general election, according to the SOS office. Other ballots represented in the vote totals during the Nov. 4-6 time period include:
- Ballots that were counted by hand
- Mail ballots received on or before Nov. 3, but that have yet to be processed
- Mail ballots postmarked by Nov. 3 that are still being processed
- Any other legally cast ballots not included in the unofficial count for Nov. 3
SOS officials said that official results will be available online after the State Board of Canvassers certifies the election. This certification must happen by Dec. 1.
