TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Turnpike Tussle is set for the pitch this Friday, with a spot in the MIAA Championship game on the line.
Top-seeded Washburn will take on No. 5 seed Emporia State in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.
When these two teams met up about a month ago, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. This time around, someone will have to come out victorious.
“Exactly what we wanted,” Emporia State soccer head coach Jane Grimley-Gunn said. “I think the bracket played out in a beautiful way, where we were really happy to play UCO and then potentially get the revenge, I guess you could say that we missed out on the regular season, but the whole time we were like, ‘Oh, I’d love to play Washburn again.’ This was kind of a great story in a way, in how it worked out.”
“We’ve done a really good job of approaching every game just the same, and it’s about us being at our best and competing at a high level when we go into every game we play,” Washburn soccer head coach Davy Phillips told 27 Sports. “I think in our league, to be honest, you have to be at your best to go and get results. And so every team in our league is really, really good, and the conference playoffs get to highlight the best of the league.”
The match is set for this Friday, No. 6, in Wichita at Stryker Sports Complex. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
The winner of this match will earn a spot in the MIAA Tournament Championship game.
