TOPEKA (KSNT) – Russel Stukey, Riley County Emergency Management Director and Fire Chief for Riley County Fire District #1, joined the 27 News morning show to chat about emergency preparedness and the upcoming fall burning season.
Stukey made an important note that as kids go back to school, it’s important to update your family emergency plan and contacts/ meeting places.

Preparing for disasters and emergencies before they happen is the best way to keep you and your family safe.
Emergencies can happen at any time. The three key elements are to:
- Talk to your family and make a plan or if you already have a plan ensure that it is updated to match your current situation.
- Build an emergency kit for your home and for your vehicle
- Stay informed
FALL BURNING SEASON IN KANSAS
- Prescribed burning can be an effective and efficient land management tool for the prairie.
- Fall burning has become more popular in recent years.
- Permits are required for prescribed burning in most Kansas counties. When weather conditions are dangerous, prescribed burning will not be allowed.
- The Kansas Forest Service has information and classes to help people learn how to safely conduct prescribed burns.
