SHAWNEE COUNTY (KSNT) – A local middle school was evacuated Wednesday morning due to a possible gas leak situation.
Washburn Rural North Middle School evacuated all students and staff at around 11:15 a.m. on Aug. 20 due to a reported odor of gas. School officials report that everyone is safe as the evacuation proceeds.
“Washburn Rural North is currently being evacuated due to a reported gas odor. All students and staff are exiting the building following standard fire drill procedures, and emergency personnel are on site. Please know that everyone is safe, and we are taking every precaution to ensure the well-being of your students. We will return to the building once the fire department issues the all-clear.”

Jessica Roberts with Washburn Rural North said in a follow-up message that an all-clear was given by fire officials with students and staff being allowed back inside the building. The school is expected to share additional information on this situation soon.
