TOPEKA (KSNT) – A major road work project on Southwest Fairlawn Road is officially delayed.
An official with the City of Topeka confirms that a planned road work project on a section of Southwest Fairlawn Road is being pushed back by several days. The project, which was slated to start on Monday, Aug. 18, is now set to start on the morning of Monday, Aug. 25. Work is scheduled to wrap up in October 2026.
“The contractor on this project notified the City of Topeka that due to delays on their end, they will not begin work on this project until Monday, August 25. The City has ordered the immediate reopening of Fairlawn Rd. until the contractor can begin work.”

Topeka road crews are set to work on Southwest Fairlawn Road from Southwest 22nd Place to Southwest 28th Street. The closure is necessary so workers can make improvements to the street, waterline, stormwater and sanitary sewer in the area.
Drivers and local residents have expressed anger and irritation over the project and the delays it is expected to bring once it begins. City officials have established a detour route for the project that will take drivers to Gage Boulevard with access to driveways and school crossings being maintained throughout the project.
