TOPEKA (KSNT) – Two children are dead, and many more are hurt after a shooting at a catholic school mass in Minneapolis.
The two children killed were eight and ten years old. 14 other children who were hurt range from six to fifteen years old. Police say the 23-year-old shooter, Robin Westman, killed himself after shooting at the victims from outside church windows.
Mater Dei Parish in Downtown Topeka is taking further precautions following the Aug. 27 shooting. The parish is strengthening their security precautions after today’s shooting. This includes keeping parents and students in the loop about what to do in a “Worst case scenario” event.

Because catholic schools have kids traveling from class to mass, the plan of action changes.
“With the classroom, you know, you can lock the door, you can barricade the door, you can hide. So, with the church, you know, we want to be able to identify trouble before it gets in. And, you know, time is really of the essence,” Matt, Nagle, Mater Dei Parish said. “So the sooner we can identify trouble, the sooner we can get law enforcement to come and help us out.”
The parish run drills every year with the students, but this September they will specifically focus on drills in the church.
