TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka West Chargers are looking to turn things around this year after a disappointing 2024 season.
The Chargers were 1-8 overall last season and 1-7 in district play. That sole win came against Turner in mid October, 32-20.
Topeka West was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to the Seaman Vikings, 65-7. With a little more experience, the Chargers are confident they can start turning things around this season.
“Last year coming in, we knew we had a young team, we knew this project was going to take multiple years to turn around,” Trey Parker, Topeka West’s head football coach, said. “But we’re consistently building every day, you know. Getting one percent better every day is kind of the motto that we had. This year we’ve got a lot of guys returning so we’re hoping that we can compete at a higher level and just get better this year.”
This year’s team will be led by Josiah Wilkie, a sophomore quarterback, who is hopeful that the offense can help push his team in the right direction.
“Win more games than last year, do a lot better on offense getting the ball down the field,” Wilkie said.
“I want to have a winning record and improve the offense and improve the defense, and have better chemistry with the team.” Damauri Peeples said, Topeka West’s sophomore wide receiver and defensive back.
The Chargers will kick of its season on Sept. 5th at 7 p.m. at De Soto.
