TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka and Lawrence Fire Departments will be facing off in a competition to see whose firefighting skills reign supreme.
The 2nd Annual Explorer Games was created by husband and wife firefighting team, Explorer Post Leader Zach Bradford with the Topeka Fire Department and Explorer Post Leader Jasmin Bradford with the Lawrence Fire Department. This event has served as a way to promote the Explorer Posts and provide a fun competition for the explorers.
Explorer Posts are a way for kids and young adults who are interested in fire service to get a taste of what it’s like to be a real firefighter. They participate in drills and training exercises to see if firefighting is something they’d like to pursue as a career.

The event features competitions like gear drills, forcible entry, search & rescue, hose bowling and more. There will also be a silent auction benefiting explorer students. Some of the items in the auction include gift cards, a signed KU basketball and more.
Event organizers would like the public to know that the Topeka Fire Department Explorer Post is currently taking new applications. Anyone interested in becoming a Topeka Fire Explorer must be between the ages of 14 and 20, have completed the 8th grade and have never been convicted of a felony. You can learn more about the explorer program by contacting Apparatus Operator Zach Bradford at zrbradfo@topeka.org.
The 2nd Annual Explorer Games is a free event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Topeka Fire Department Training Center located at 324 SE Jefferson St. Topeka.
