KANSAS (KSNT) – It’s that time of the year again, flu season, and doctors and pharmacists, like the ones at Jayhawk Pharmacy, say that now is the best time to get vaccinated.
Last year’s flu season was the worst in 12 years, with many hospitals overwhelmed with patients. On average, the Center for Disease Control says the flu vaccine is anywhere from 40 to 60% effective. So while may not keep you from getting sick, studies show it could keep you out of the hospital.

Most importantly, the vaccine protects not only you but also your family, your friends and the community.
“Those who are immunocompromised for various reasons, treatment of cancer or taking medications that suppress the immune system, if you have heart disease, asthma, or other lung diseases, or diabetes, if you’re pregnant, or if you’re a couple weeks post-partum,” said Nurse Practitioner Kristie Hartig. “Those are the most serious risks for the complications of the flu.”
After being vaccinated, it takes a few weeks for the medicine to even start working, so the sooner you get it, the faster you are protected.
What’s on the Kansas Supreme Court’s October docket?
“Flu season peaks December to February, so, takes a couple weeks for immunity starts, so before the end of October is ideal,” said Pharmacist Josh Bjelland.
Anyone over the age of 6 months old can get the flu shot. You can contact your doctor or go to almost any pharmacy to get vaccinated.
