TOPEKA (KSNT) – Washburn’s Community Nursing van is out in the community providing the community with crucial health services.
The Van is the bridge between the future professionals in healthcare and the community. Students at Washburn University’s School of Nursing use it to get hands-on experience. They take it around town to provide free and low-cost health services.

“We partner with a community organization called El Centro, and we take our mobile health unit to different churches throughout the community that are Spanish-speaking,” said Director of Community Engagement at Washburn School of Nursing, Michelle Heusi. “And we also bring a live interpreter. Her name is Auda, and she comes along with us, and we offer free blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol screenings to people.”
“The skill part of it, like what needs to be done as far as like the consents, speaking to them, making sure they understand and clarify what we’re trying to do,” said nursing student Yanniibah Brunello. “That’s helping us build better communication.”
