TOPEKA (KSNT) – City workers are at the scene of a water main break impacting traffic near a busy southwest Topeka intersection.
Infrastructure Communications Specialist Amanda Knowland said on Friday, Nov. 14 that work crews are just north of where Southwest 29th Street intersects with Southwest Gage Boulevard. The City Utilities Distribution crews are assessing a 12-inch water main break in this area.
“Our Street crews are currently closing the southbound lanes so that work can begin to locate the break underground and repair the water main,” Knowland said. “All businesses that will be impacted by the water shutoff have been notified by the City. Crews will estimate a timeline for repairs once they get underground and assess the severity of the break.”

Joseph Harrington with the City of Topeka said both southbound through lanes on Gage Boulevard will need to be shut down for repairs to take place. A detour is in place for southbound drivers on the boulevard and the detour route for the nearby Southwest Fairlawn Road project will change slightly due to the water main break.
- Southwest Gage Boulevard detour.
- Southbound on Southwest Gage Boulevard, then turn east on Southwest 21st Street, turn south on Southwest Washburn Avenue, go west on Southwest 29th Street and back onto Southwest Gage Boulevard.
- Southwest Fairlawn Road detour.
- Eastbound on Southwest 21st Street, then turn south onto Southwest Washburn Avenue, go west on Southwest 29th Street and turn south to get back onto Southwest Fairlawn Road.
Harrington said repairs are estimated to take around two to three weeks.
