TOPEKA (KSNT) – Affordable homes are coming to North Topeka after city leaders signed off on a proposal at Tuesday nights city council meeting.
Since 1984, Habitat for Humanity has built over 115 homes in Topeka. That number will continue to rise as Topeka city council voted to approve the rezoning of a lot near the southeast corner of NW Tyler Street and NW Lyman Road to a “R-2” Single-Family Residential use. This will allow the non-profit to build 23 detached single-family dwellings in the area.

That space currently sits vacant, but it is near to other homes in the area. District one councilwoman Karen Hiller voted to rezone that area. She says she likes this location and that it’s close to her heart.
“Habitat always does a wonderful job of high quality, affordable housing for people,” Hiller said. “In that area, it’s very close to Topeka Boulevard and all those shopping and businesses, and so it’s just going to be a great complex. Habitat always does a great job.”
The rezoning will take place in Christina Valdivia-Alcala’s district. While she wasn’t at Tuesday’s meeting in person, she also voted in approval for the rezoning.
