TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Tuesday following Thanksgiving is known as Giving Tuesday, and one national organization is in the midst of its holiday program.
The Salvation Army’s annual Angel Tree program provides gifts for children who usually go without gifts during the holiday season. This year, many influencers across social media platforms have taken Angel Tree donating to a new level, providing them with gifts and memories to last a lifetime.
We spoke with a co-officer of the Salvation Army of Topeka and Shawnee County about whether they have seen an uptick in 2025 compared to years past.
“It’s hard to know what’s driving it locally, but we have had comments from the Walmart staff, for instance, saying that a lot more people are picking up the angels, and we’re getting them back in pretty good time,” said Major Tom McDowell.

The Salvation Army is accepting donations until Dec. 10 to have time to organize and distribute the presents.
Angel Trees are located at Walmarts, Sam’s Club, McGaw Bank and a few churches. Salvation Army asks that the gifts not be wrapped so they can hand them on to the families. But if you would like to include wrapping paper and gift bags, that would be wonderful. You can learn more about how to help by visiting the Salvation Army’s website.
