TOPEKA (KSNT) – Despite frigid temperatures, people across Topeka stepped outside to take advantage of the fresh snowfall.
Adults and children alike gathered at the steep hill near the Menards on SW 17th Street, a well-known sledding spot that draws crowds every winter. The hill remains a favorite because of its unique layout, with a small field at the bottom that provides a smoother, safer landing than hills that end in asphalt.
Sledders say the hill’s steepness adds to the fun, even if the climb back up is a challenge.

“This hill is very steep. Good for sledding, but coming back up, it’s not very easy,” said Topeka resident Anthony Helm. “You can slide up onto one of the hills and then slide back down, giving yourself a speed boost.”
Helm says he returns to the hill year after year and often brings friends along to experience it for the first time.
