JEFFERSON COUNTY (KSNT) – Kansas transportation officials are warning local residents in Jefferson County of an impending road work project that will impact traffic on U.S. Highway 24 near Topeka.
The Kansas Department of Transportation issued letters to local residents earlier this month regarding an update for the ongoing $64.4 million Highway 24 project running from Kansas Avenue in Topeka to Muddy Creek. This reconstruction and pavement replacement project got started in 2023 and is scheduled to wrap up in 2027.
Do you still have to slow down for work zones on the weekend in Kansas?
KDOT’s letter to nearby residents informed them that eastbound Highway 24, including K-4 ramps and local tie-ins are set to open on or around Monday, Jan. 26, though this date may be impacted by recent winter weather. Work will then start on the westbound lanes in the following days. Drivers should be aware of the following changes that will be implemented at the work site:
- Westbound Highway 24 ramps for south K-4/Oakland Expressway and the Happy Hollow Road junction will be completely shut down for the duration of work in the area.
- Westbound ramps to and from north K-4 will also close, though not all at once.
- Westbound U.S. 24 lanes will be shut down through the corridor and both directors of traffic on the highway will be shifted into the eastbound lanes.
KDOT said there will be no detour for the Happy Hollow Road closure. Drivers are encouraged to use the following routes while the project is underway:
- Eastbound drivers can use Northeast 31st Street to K-4.
- Westbound travelers can use Northeast 35th Street to Topeka Boulevard.
Kate Craft, a spokeswoman for KDOT, told 27 News on Jan. 23 this road project may be delayed due to recent winter weather conditions. However, updated information is expected to be released this week on the project timeline.
