TOPEKA (KSNT) – Newly elected Topeka Mayor Spencer Duncan joined City Manager Robert Perez on Tuesday morning for a press conference.
Duncan and Perez held their monthly press conference at 10 a.m. on Jan. 27 inside City Hall. They were joined by others during the press conference including Interim Director of Public Works Jason Tryon, Vice President of Community Impact at the United Way of Kaw Valley Brett Martin and Topeka Police Department Lieutenant Kelvin Johnson.
Duncan, who recently became the new mayor of the City of Topeka, addressed the gathering for the monthly presser for the first time since taking office. He touched on numerous topics related to snow removal, donating blood, flood control on the Shunganunga Creek, availability regarding meeting with local residents and what he looks forward to accomplishing this year.
“Our staff did a pretty good job out there clearing the main roads and making sure that people could drive,” Duncan said. “And we had to make some tough decisions because it was, the nice thing was it was a wonderful powder snow, which means people could drive through it, but that certainly impacts critical decisions you have to make in real time.”

Johnson encouraged people during the meeting to apply to the TPD’s Citizens’ Academy which kicks off on March 5 and run for 13 weeks. The TPD has offered this program for 30 years running and it gives locals a chance to learn more about the day-to-day activities of police officers.
“The intent of this class is to allow our public to build understanding, trust, meaningful community partnerships and to have a better understanding of what happens behind the badge, how do we got about doing our daily jobs,” Johnson said.
