TOPEKA (KSNT) – State health officials have rescinded a health advisory for Lake Shawnee in Topeka following a recent sewage spill.
Jill Bronaugh with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said in a press release on Feb. 3 that a stream advisory for part of Lake Shawnee is now rescinded. The advisory was issued on Jan. 29 due to a nearby sewage spill caused by a ruptured pipe.
The KDHE issued the advisory for an area in the northeast section of the lake at the inlet southeast of the public swimming beach area known as Adventure Cove. Workers conducting excavation activities damaged a pipe, causing sewage to spill into the lake’s water.
Bronaugh said that testing of the water near the spill site shows that bacteria and contaminant levels have dropped to the normal range. The KDHE reports the lake is now safe for swimming and livestock use.
