TOPEKA (KSNT) – A local senior center offered up some feel-good food, along with a lesson on heart health on Friday.
For the second year running, the East Topeka Senior Center hosted its popular soul food fundraiser. All the food was homemade by the senior cooks.
The Topeka Doula Project was also on hand, with important information about heart health. Organizers said this meal is a way for seniors to engage with the community.
“A lot of people say they have never tasted soul food,” said Deborah Dawkins, executive director of the East Topeka Senior Center. “They don’t know what it is. So it gives them some diversity. I like seeing our seniors engaged, and I like seeing the community engaged with that.”
“But we’re also spreading awareness simply about heart health because over 80% of Shawnee County residents are on blood pressure medication,” said Executive Director of the Topeka Doula Project Abriona Markham. ”What are we doing to give them information about having a healthy heart? What preventative things are we doing and putting in our community.”
In addition to a good meal, there was also a raffle, with heart healthy prizes.
