POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY (KSNT) – Health officials have issued a boil water advisory to rural residents in Pottawatomie and Jackson Counties on Wednesday due to a major water main break in the area.
Pottawatomie County Rural Water District #4 said in an alert issued shortly before noon on Feb. 11 that a major water main break has been reported. The agency is asking locals in the district to conserve water until further notice.

The district reports the water main break is in an area along Jeffrey Road north of St. Marys. Crews are currently working to repair the damage.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued a boil water advisory on Feb. 11 in response to the water main break. Residents in Pottawatomie County Rural Water District #4, Jeffery Energy Center and the City of Delia in Jackson County are impacted by this alert. People who are living in areas impacted by this boil water advisory will need to take precautions while it remains in place. These include the following:
- Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.
- Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
- If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
- Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
- Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
The KDHE will keep the boil water advisory in place until the water main break is repaired. People who have questions about this can contact the KDHE at 785-296-5514 or the water supplier at 785-456-7935.
