TOPEKA (KSNT) – Firefighters put out a house fire in southwest Topeka on Wednesday morning.
The Topeka Fire Department responded to a reported house fire shortly before 10 a.m. on Feb. 25 in the 2000 block of Southwest Harp Place. Fire crews arriving at the scene spotted thick black smoke coming from the home’s attic space and all sides of the house.
Kimberly Qualls with the City of Topeka said firefighters found two dogs inside the home and had to apply life-saving measures for them. Firefighters couldn’t revive the animals, despite CPR. The fire was brought under control a little before 10:30 a.m. by fire crews.
What is the city doing to push back against the downtown Topeka housing shortage?
Qualls said no smoke detectors were located inside the home. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature.

“The Topeka Fire Department reminds residents that working smoke alarms are a critical first
line of defense in a home fire and encourages all residents to ensure smoke alarms are properly
installed and maintained.”Topeka Fire Department statement
