TOPEKA (KSNT) – It is every college student’s favorite week coming up — spring break. It is a pause from classes to relax and to have fun with your friends.
However, it is important that you should be safe while going out and having fun.
If you are traveling abroad, check to see what color and level of danger is associated with your destination, and make sure you have copies of your government documents in case you misplace one.
“It’s as unsafe as you make it. Well, let’s not go bar hoping by ourselves or you and your girlfriend at 10:00 at night. You know, that is putting yourself into a situation that you probably don’t need to be in and probably wouldn’t be in here at home. Because, again, if you wouldn’t do it at home, why would you do it there,” Travel Advisor Tammy Switzer said.
For road trips, make sure you always have your seatbelt on, and take turns driving if someone is tired. And of course — no drinking and driving.
“Save the party and for your destination for sure. We don’t want to do that on the highway or while you’re traveling for sure. And make sure you know your local resources. If you’re traveling abroad, 911 might not be that emergency number. It may be different. So, you need to inform yourself about that,” Chief of Police at Washburn University Chris Enos said.
Travel.state.gov is a great resource to track threats around the country and abroad, in present time.

“Situational awareness and common sense just rule, rule the day for a vacation,” Switzer said.
Remember to always be aware of your surroundings, have a buddy system and use common sense when travelling anywhere.
