TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kansas Attorney General is urging Kansans to avoid scams by unregistered contractors after the state sustained storm damage over the weekend.
Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach is warning Kansas residents to avoid scams of storm damage repairs by unregistered roofing contractors after recent storms, including a tornado in Johnson County.
“After a storm, our instinct is to clean up and make repairs as quickly as possible,” Kobach said in a press release. “When considering roofing work on a home or business, it is important that consumers make sure their roofing contractor is properly registered before signing any contract or having any work done.”
The attorney general is requesting that Kansans report any unregistered persons or company attempting to sell roofing services. Any consumers of roofing contracting should request a copy of the contractor’s registration certificate or the company’s registration number.
The attorney general’s tips for dealing with unregistered contractors include:
- Get recommendations and references
- Get at least three written estimates from different contractors
- Check contractor complaint records with the Better Business Bureau
- Understand payment options and right to cancel
