TOPEKA (KSNT)- The Topeka Police Department says they have seen an increase in pedestrians not using the crosswalk properly.
In 2024, nine people were killed in Topeka and 13 in Shawnee County as a result of being hit. The TPD suggests that if there is no crosswalk, go closest to an intersection. Cars need to be extra aware of their surroundings now that the weather is nicer and people are outside.
“You are a pedestrian on the roadway, always walk with the traffic. If there is no sidewalk available, that would be to the left side of the road. You want to face the traffic as you’re walking and have it coming towards you to help you be visible to them,” said Sergeant Jesse Lowe. “But you can also see any traffic coming at you. One of the most important ones is when you’re at a stoplight, and there is always that pedestrian that’s off to the right corner. Always check to see which way they’re trying to cross before you pull out from the green light.”

Remember to use common sense, look both ways and do not make random sudden movements when crossing the street.
