WASHINGTON COUNTY (KSNT) – The U.S. Postal Service is looking for a new home for a post office near the Kansas-Nebraska border this month.
The USPS announced in a press release on March 16 that it is considering the relocation of its post office located at 212 North Main St. in Mahaska. A potential loss of lease has prompted the postal service to search for a new home for this post office location.
The USPS said it will be considering several options at this time for the relocation of retail services in Mahaska. These options include the following:
- Leasing an existing structure of about 1,550 square feet with around 12 or more parking spaces.
- Leasing land of about 10,000-15,000 square feet to place a postal-owned building.
- Buy land of about 15,000 square feet for a new structure
- Install a smaller retail-only facility of 675 square feet and about nine or more parking spots.

The USPS said the relocation will consist of finding and acquiring a suitable substitute location for the Mahaska Post Office that is as close as reasonably possible to the current spot. Retail services will continue at the current location until the lease ends or will be temporarily relocated until all necessary preparations are completed at the new location.
People living in the nearby area who use the Mahaska Post Office can send in comments on this relocation project for 45 days from March 16 to: United States Postal Service, Attn Mahaska KS Relocation, PO BOX 27497, Greensboro, NC 27498-1103.
