TOPEKA (KSNT) – Hot temperatures are starting to arrive in Kansas, but people may need to avoid turning on their air conditioning units just yet.
Summer-like heat arrived early on Saturday, March 21 with temperatures reaching the mid-90s. You may have found yourself reaching for the thermostat. However, experts said there are a few things you should do before cranking the A/C.
“You want to make sure the air conditioner is clean,” said Greg DeBacker, owner of DeBacker Heating and Air Conditioning. “It has to breathe. I recommend doing that in June, July, August… maybe even now before you turn the air conditioner on. If you have a humidifier, make sure it’s turned off. We don’t want any more humidity in the air.”

Experts also said that if your unit has seen better days, now’s the time to act.
“You want to do it before it gets really hot, because all the air conditioning companies will get very, very busy,” DeBacker said.
