ALMA (KSNT) — A national tour focused on civic education made a stop in Alma on Wednesday— giving students a closer look at American history ahead of the country’s 250th birthday.
Katie Gorka, a senior advisor for civic education with the U.S. Department of Education, visited Wabaunsee High School on March 25 as part of the “History Rocks!” tour. U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon announced the tour late last year, where educational leaders travel to different schools across the country aimed at advancing civic education.
During Gorka’s visit, she spoke with students about the importance of civic engagement and how schools are preparing for the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

The nationwide tour highlights how schools are teaching U.S. history and civics in engaging, interactive ways. Students at Wabaunsee High School participated in lessons designed to help them connect more deeply with the country’s past.
“I think for kids to realize that they are the nation,” Gorka said. “It’s not like people in Washington that can control things. It’s every single one of us who has an important role to play.”
School leaders say events like this give students a meaningful experience beyond traditional classroom learning.
“This program did a great job of inspiring students to become part of history and to make it important in their local community,” said Jan Hutley.
The “History Rocks!” tour will continue making stops across the country throughout 2026. The tour is also part of the America 250 Civics Education Coalition.
