TOPEKA (KSNT) – Work crews will be shutting down part of I-70 in the Topeka area this weekend as part of an ongoing major road work project.
Kate Craft with the Kansas Department of Transportation announced in a press release that eastbound I-70 will shut down from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 28. The closure will consist of eastbound I-70 from MacVicar Avenue to Fourth Street.
Craft said drivers traveling east will have to exit the highway at MacVicar Avenue. KDOT will direct drivers to take I-470 or head north to U.S. 75 to get around the work zone. A local street detour will also be provided:
- Head south on Southwest MacVicar Avenue to Southwest Sixth Avenue.
- Go east on Southwest Sixth Avenue to Topeka Boulevard.
- Turn south on Topeka Boulevard and continue to Southwest 10th Avenue.
- Head east on Southwest 10th Avenue back to eastbound I-70.

KDOT is currently conducting a major road work project on I-70 in Topeka known as the Polk-Quincy Viaduct Project. This $239 million project will transform the viaduct in downtown Topeka by widening it to include additional lanes of traffic.
