TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka firefighters assisted residents at a local nursing home early Friday morning following an electrical fire.
Shift Commander Chris Stanley with the Topeka Fire Department said in a press release that firefighters were called around midnight on April 3 to the Topeka Presbyterian Manor in the 4700 block SW Sixth Street. Fire crews arriving at the scene found smoke in the healthcare area of the home where a sprinkler system had already suppressed the fire.
Firefighters completed fire suppression operations and secured the sprinkler system to minimize any water damage to the nursing home. A few of the residents inside the building were relocated due to smoke extension, with others being able to shelter in place.

Stanley said the TFD’s investigation unit identified the cause of the fire as an electrical issue. Smoke detectors were located inside the nursing home.
Christina Taylor with the Topeka Presbyterian Manor provided 27 News with the following statement on the fire:
“Topeka Presbyterian Manor is thankful to the Topeka Fire Department and our team for their quick response after a small fire at a kitchenette in our health care neighborhood overnight.
Our fire alarms and sprinkler systems worked as designed and thankfully no-one was hurt.
Two residents were relocated due to water damage and we’re ensuring they’re comfortable and supported. We expect them to be back in their rooms very soon.
We’re grateful everyone is safe.”
